AeroSemiTrailer

A semi-trailer truck is a massive vehicle, that has a towing engine, the power that one engine holds is next to unbelievable.a another name for a semi is "tractors" or "Rigs"-etc .Semi's are not only found in the the United States, they can be found in many other places, pretty much everywhere.A semi's semi-trailers was built to carry up to 4 times its weight, but dew to massive issues(I think D.O.T.),its just save to carry about 2(possibly more)the trailer was also built to transport anything that can fit(if it can fit,it can transport)In Canada; semi or single in Australia; semi, tractor-trailer, big rig, or eighteen-wheeler, in the United States; articulated lorry, abbreviated article, in Britain and Ireland; and "lorry" in Malawi.Truckers have a split personality in the public imagination: They're either invisible knights of the highway known to be ever ready to lend a hand to a stranded motorist, or solidarity-seeking union protesters who block highways, traveling in speeding packs. What's indisputable is the degree to which the U.S. economy relies on the semi truck.Semi trucks are all over the United States.

In fact, according to the Department of Transportation(D.O.T.), in 1997 there were 21 million trucks traveling a total of more than 412 billion miles. Semi trucks are fascinating machines, and there are probably a lot of things you do not know about them. The flaps underneath the semi truck trailer are actually there to improve performance.

Studies have shown that adding acetone to the fuel of semi trucks can improve performance. In fact, according to Pureenergysystems.com, adding acetone at 2 percent of volume may increase the gas mileage by as much as 4 to 7 percent.

According to the Department of Transportation, freight tonnage is expected to increase 70 percent between 1998 and 2020.

The average semi truck trailer is between 28 feet and 57 feet. The turning radius of these trucks is affected by the position of the kingpin. This is the pin that connects the trailer to the truck. According to the Federal Highway Commission, "the longer the kingpin setting, the larger the turning radius."

The average stopping time of an 18-wheeled semi truck is 40 percent higher than that of a car. That means if the truck needs to brake suddenly, it needs 40 percent more distance than the average automobile.

According to Thetruckersreport.com,the maximum legal weight for an 18-wheeled truck is 80,000 pounds, or 40 tons. For comparison, the average personal vehicle weighs around 5,000 pounds. This is one reason why many city roads do not allow large trucks.

A semi-trailer does not trail completely behind a towing vehicle, but is attached at a point that is just forward of the rear-most axle of the towing unit. This is done so that a large portion of the weight of the trailer is carried by the prime mover. This arrangement means that both tractor and semi-trailer will have a distinctly different design than a rigid truck and trailer. The cargo trailer usually has a tandem axle pair at the rear, each of which has dual wheels, or eight wheels on the trailer, four per axle.[b] The combination of eight tires on the trailer and ten tires on the tractor is what led to the moniker eighteen wheeler, although this term is considered by some truckers to be a misnomer. Many trailers are equipped with movable tandem axles to allow adjusting the weight distribution. The United States also allows two-axle tractors to pull two single-axle 28.5 ft (8.7 m) semi-trailers, known officially as STAA doubles, and colloquially as doubles, a set, or a set of joints, on all highways that are part of the national network.

To connect the second of a set of doubles to the first trailer, and to support the front half of the second trailer, a converter gear, also known as a con-gear or dolly is used. This apparatus has one or two axles, a fifth-wheel coupling for the rear trailer, and a tongue with a ring-hitch coupling for the forward trailer. Individual states may further allow longer vehicles, known as "longer combination vehicles" or LCVs), and may allow them to operate on roads other than those that are part of the national network.
